Problems You Can Face While on Chadar Trek

Chadar trek is one of the most challenging and adventurous treks in the Himalayas. So, before embarking on this trek it is important that you are both mentally and physically prepared to undertake the trek. The difficulties involved in this trek come in not one but many ways. Take a look at the top challenges that you might face during the course of Chadar Trek

Challenges faced on Chadar Trek

  • Extreme Temperatures
You must be very well aware of the atrocious temperature drops on Chadar Trek. It comes down to -30 degree Celsius, that can freeze the Zanskar River and also the waterfall of Nerak. All thanks to human anatomy, human beings warm-blooded have the ability to regulate high temperatures regardless of external temperatures. But definitely, that’s not enough. It is advisable that you carry your warmest of jackets on the trek in order to fight the bone-chilling cold. Also, you can consider layering up instead of opting to wear a single thick sweater or jacket. More the layers more is the insulation.
  • Water & Food
The region experiences extremely low temperatures with everything freezing real quick. The water also turns into ice in no time and also there is no point carrying packed food as it will freeze too. You will have to make pit stops to prepare lunch and then serve it warm. Also, due to the extremities, the food that you will be served on the trek is going to be simple, containing little to no nutrients which you will require to replenish your energy. So, ensure that you are ready for this.
  • Long Walking Stretches
Unlike other treks, this trek does not require many ascents and descents but it does involve walking long distances on a frozen bed of the river. Be prepared to travel a distance of 14-15km for 5-6 hours plus the weight of your rucksack to it. Also, you will come across a few paths where you will have to climb too and you will ask me, you better start walking if you don’t.
  • Unpredictable Weather
Be prepared to deal with whatever comes your way as no one has control over the weather conditions including the trek operators too. Get ready to experience untimely snowfall or rain on the trek, days when there will be absolutely no sun and also days where you will be lucky to have been blessed with some sun over you. Beware of the snow blizzards and ensure that you are prepared for the trek both mentally and physically.
  • Acute Mountain Sickness
The trek is situated at extremely great heights(11200 ft.), so it is suggested to spend a day in Leh for acclimatization. Despite this, there are also chances that some trekkers might experience AMS, nausea, headache or breathing difficulties at night due to the lowering levels of oxygen on the trek.
The above discussed are some of the top problems that a trekker might face when on Chadar Trek. If you too are planning to take this trek, anytime in near future, then ensure that you are well aware of all these problems and also ways in which you can combat these problems, because every problem comes with a solution.
